Nowadays famous people are photographed by professional photographers everywhere they go. Some people say this is a good thing because the public are interested in their lives. Other people think that photographers are wrong to follow famous people.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In recent times, celebrities are often captured by media wherever they go. While some support this trend as they opine people are keen to follow their lives, others criticize it. In my view, it is a constant violation of their privacy and it negatively affects both celebrities and the public.

The dominant reason is the everyone has a fundamental right to privacy, and this should apply to singers, actors and sportsmen. Because fame does not strip away right to privacy, they are still human beings who deserve a personal space. When media photographs them with their friends and families, it is no longer a professional reporting but an invasion of dignity. Such behaviour can also damage their mental wellbeing and ignite unnecessary rumours about their wealth and relationships. Such rumours not only mislead the society but also creating unrealistic expectations in younger demographics.

On the contrary, there are some people who argue that it is beneficial for public and renowned personalities. Since politicians are in-charge of public funds, strict scrutiny from the media by taking their pictures keeps them accountable for their actions. Furthermore, some celebrities also benefit if they are photographed at the right times. For instance, a French politician was recently photographed by media while playing soccer with young school students. When that picture got viral he instantly became famous among youth of the country.

In conclusion, although there could be some merits of being photographed by media, I believe celebrities should not be expected to allow media intrusion as part of their fame. Protecting their personal lives is essential for their wellbeing and also to prevent rumours from spreading to wider public. The media should only capture such people on public events and private matters should remain private.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both sides of the argument and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is consistent throughout the essay. Ideas are generally well-developed, such as the discussion on the right to privacy and the counter-argument regarding political accountability. However, the development could be slightly more nuanced; for instance, the distinction between celebrities and politicians is introduced but could be expanded to better explain why the public interest in one might differ from the other. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the transition between the arguments is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'On the contrary', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints. While the flow is generally natural, some of the linking phrases are standard, which prevents the response from reaching the highest band for cohesion, but the overall structure is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is sufficient and generally precise. Phrases like 'constant violation of their privacy', 'ignite unnecessary rumours', and 'unrealistic expectations' demonstrate a good range. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'mislead the society' (should be 'mislead society') and 'not only... but also creating' (parallelism error). However, the student successfully uses less common items and maintains a formal tone throughout. The range is adequate to convey complex ideas without significant difficulty for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over grammar, though there are occasional slips. For example, 'the everyone has' is a grammatical error, and 'but also creating' should be 'but also create' to maintain parallel structure. Additionally, 'the media' is sometimes used without an article or with an unnecessary one in certain contexts. Despite these occasional errors, the majority of sentences are error-free, and the meaning is never obscured. The punctuation is generally accurate, supporting the clarity of the arguments.
