Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is an undeniable fact that popular people are getting followed by paparazzi everywhere. Few individuals say that it is because of common people's interest and excitement to follow celebrities lifestyles, while other maintain that it is concerning for popular person's privacy and freedom of living. The case might be made on both side of the debate, however, everybody should be spared for their personal moments to live without any surveillance, as we shall see below.

On the one hand, the general populace is always keen to imitate their favourite athlete's diet, nutrition plan and exercise schedule. Celebrity media captures popular people's everyday routine and make it viral on social media platforms, for instance, Instagram or Facebook. In addition to this, the paparazzi captures the lead actor's or actress's costumes and shopping habits, that will inspire adolescents to copy the dressing style and the wardrobe collection.

On the other hand, it is the watertight fact that certain personal moments of any person, should not be revealed at public platform, as they are not the public property. Admittedly, the gutter press follows the figureheads or actors even inside their personal property, such as family dinner at the backyard where they spend their quality time with their loved ones. Therefore, revealing their messy looking face/dress or their kid's pictures at public site is truly inappropriate. Moreover, celebrities might go through the difficult emotional trauma sometimes, and surveilling these moments are totally unethical, which are mostly performed by gossip media persons. Added to this, their confidential love-life scenarios should not be publicised until they confirm to the public or audience.

To encapsulate, it is true that people can follow their celebrity trough media pictures but sometimes unethical as it brreaches privacy

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the influence of celebrity culture on fashion and the ethical concerns regarding privacy. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The conclusion is very brief and lacks the depth required for a higher band, as it fails to fully synthesise the arguments presented. To improve, ensure that the conclusion restates the main points and reinforces the position more comprehensively rather than just summarizing the final thought.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In addition to this' are used to guide the reader through the arguments. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. The final paragraph is underdeveloped, which affects the overall flow and sense of completion. Improving the variety of cohesive links and ensuring a more balanced structure between paragraphs would elevate the score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some good attempts at topic-specific language like 'surveillance', 'figureheads', and 'emotional trauma'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'watertight fact' (which is not standard in this context) and 'messy looking face'. There are also minor spelling errors like 'trough' instead of 'through' and 'brreaches'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring precision in word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'the case might be made on both side' (should be 'sides') and 'surveilling these moments are totally unethical' (subject-verb agreement error). Punctuation is mostly accurate, but there are minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. The majority of sentences are understandable, but more consistent control over complex structures is needed to move into the 7.0+ range.
