Student answer (Band 6.0)

Being a public figure comes with lots of advantages and disadvantages. Famous people are in constant scrutiny of the public. They are often judged for everything such as what they wear, how they carry themselves, what are their political views, and especially where they go.

They are constantly photographed by a media outlet or professional photographers if they are spotted at a public or private event. They are often asked to click a picture with their fans and they are judged on how they react to some of these requests. It has certain advantages. People who are interested have latest information about their lives. It would also boost tourism of certain places they visit as they are setting some standards. This may work in favor of a famous actor, helping them remain relevant in the film industry, which is often encouraged by their team.

On the contrary, there are some disadvantages. Constantly photographed, there are chances as it might affect their personal lives. Even if they wish, they cannot randomly visit any place or go out with their family and participate in any other activities. They are in constant supervision of people around them. Due to this, there are chances of someone following them and eventually invading their privacy.

n conclusion, leading a public life comes with more disadvantages than advantages. I believe they should have liberty to decide when they can be photographed. This would not invade their privacy and help them live a common life which would also benefit their family.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about 'boosting tourism' is mentioned but not clearly linked to the photographers' actions, and the argument regarding the disadvantages is repetitive, focusing heavily on the general concept of privacy. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific examples or deeper analysis of why the public's interest justifies or fails to justify the intrusion. The conclusion is clear, but the overall depth of the essay remains at a basic level, barely meeting the requirements for a more comprehensive discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each viewpoint, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the contrary' and 'Due to this', but the flow between sentences can feel a bit mechanical. Some transitions are slightly abrupt, and the referencing could be smoother. For example, the transition between the benefits of being photographed and the disadvantages could be more sophisticated. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow, though the range of cohesive devices is somewhat limited.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'public figure', 'scrutiny', and 'invading their privacy'. However, the range is somewhat restricted, and there are instances where word choice could be more precise. For example, 'click a picture' is informal; 'take a photograph' would be more appropriate. Additionally, phrases like 'setting some standards' are vague and do not clearly convey the intended meaning. To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips. For instance, 'They are in constant scrutiny' should be 'under constant scrutiny', and 'They should have liberty' requires an article: 'the liberty'. There are also minor issues with prepositions and phrasing, such as 'participate in any other activities'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring subject-verb agreement would help improve your accuracy.
