Nowadays famous people are photographed by professional photographers everywhere they go. Some people say this is a good thing because the public are interested in their lives. Other people think that photographers are wrong to follow famous people.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

In today's technologically advanced world, people have greater access to information about their role models. This has provided a new business opportunity for social media platforms and online media channels. Posting pictures of famous people in order to attract more views and subsequently earn money from them has become common. While some people consider this a positive development, others argue that it is inappropriate for photographers to follow celebrities wherever they go. In my opinion, photographing celebrities at public events can be beneficial, but constantly following them in their private lives is an invasion of privacy.

On the one hand, photographs of celebrities participating in social causes may play a vital role in encouraging people to support those causes. For example, if a celebrity visits a flood-affected area to provide aid and photographs of this activity are published, it may encourage members of the public to provide funds for the cause. In addition, many people are interested in the daily lives of famous individuals, so publishing photographs of them can satisfy public curiosity and provide entertainment.

On the other hand, some people believe that it is not right to follow famous people wherever they go. They argue that professional photographers are often more interested in capturing celebrities' day-to-day lives, which may be unnecessary and provide little benefit to society. Moreover, constantly being followed and photographed can invade celebrities' privacy and potentially damage their reputations. Everyone, including famous people, should have the right to enjoy their private lives without being continuously monitored by photographers.

In my opinion, professional photographers should be allowed to photograph celebrities when they are attending public events or engaging in activities that are relevant to the public. However, following them into their private lives simply to satisfy public curiosity is unjustifiable. Therefore, there should be a reasonable balance between the public's interest and celebrities' right to privacy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the distinction between public events and private life. The introduction sets the stage effectively, and the conclusion synthesizes the arguments well. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific examples or explore the nuance of 'public interest' versus 'public curiosity' in greater depth. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the arguments are logically extended, meeting the requirements for a high-level response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the two sides of the argument is smooth, using appropriate cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. Referencing is clear, and the paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct points. The flow of the argument is natural and easy to follow, with no instances of mechanical or repetitive linking. The structure is coherent and supports the overall argument effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'technologically advanced world', 'satisfy public curiosity', and 'unjustifiable' show a good command of language. While the vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for the context, it lacks a few more sophisticated or idiomatic collocations that would elevate it to the highest band. However, there are no errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication, and the language used is natural and fits the formal tone of the essay well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional clauses ('if a celebrity visits...') and subordinate clauses ('while some people consider...'). The grammar is highly accurate, with the majority of sentences being error-free. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there is a good control over verb tenses and subject-verb agreement. The writing is fluent, and the few minor slips are rare and do not affect the clarity of the message. The control over complex structures is consistent.
