IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays famous people are photographed by professional photographers everywhere they go. Some people say this is a good thing because the public are interested in their lives. Other people think that photographers are wrong to follow famous people.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times, eminent personalities are being captured by professional photographers wherever they visit. Few individuals argue that this practice is innovative because public are interested in their standard of living whereas some are against the statement and believe that photographers should focus on other things rather than following popular individuals. In this discourse, I will explain both perspectives on the basis of some relevant reasons with my opinion in the conclusion.

Photography and videography becomes a part of contemporary world and one of the most prominent benefits of capturing celebrities is spreading information. In other words, supporters follow their role models by knowing their lives, in order to become successful such as remaining fit or adopting their clothing styles and hence fans want to look like them. Moreover, if someone have a dream to meet with any famous person, he or she might get a chance by having a glance at online picture because photographers mostly post it on social media for views and likes.

However, some people reckon photographers should share other pictures instead of celebrities because this can have adverse effects on their privacy. To sketch out further, they should have their permission first and bothering them might annoy their mental peace. Furthermore, viewers find nature photographs more relaxing and soothing as compared to eminent populace, if captured by professional cameraman.

To recapitulate, after taking everything into consideration, I believe that although photos play a crucial role in society, particularly of famous people, yet professional photographers should concentrate on other aspects because they might hurt someone's privacy and if needed, they should constantly ask for permission.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding 'spreading information' is a bit superficial, and the counter-argument about privacy could have been expanded with more specific examples or deeper analysis. While the task is fully addressed, the depth of the discussion is more characteristic of a Band 6.0, as some points are under-developed and the reasoning lacks a degree of sophistication required for higher bands.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'In other words', 'Moreover', 'However', and 'To recapitulate' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as the use of 'this' to refer to broad concepts. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be smoother to achieve a more natural, sophisticated structure. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the logical sequence is maintained throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'eminent personalities', 'discourse', and 'adverse effects'. However, there are also some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'eminent populace' (which is not a standard collocation) and 'mental peace' (which is slightly unnatural). While the range is sufficient to convey meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score. The errors do not impede communication, but they do highlight a need for more natural phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Photography and videography becomes', 'if someone have a dream') and article usage errors ('the public are', 'by having a glance at online picture'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the intended meaning. To improve, the writer should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. The range of structures is sufficient for the task, but more consistent accuracy is needed to reach a higher band.
