IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays famous people are photographed by professional photographers everywhere they go. Some people say this is a good thing because the public are interested in their lives. Other people think that photographers are wrong to follow famous people.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

These days celebrities are followed and photographed by paparazzi wherever they go. There are both positive and negative affects of this and I would like to share my views on both before giving my opinion.

Firstly, I would like to start with the downsides of photographers clicking pictures of famous people everywhere. The most significant downside is that the celebrities do not get privacy. There have been a lot of cases where major actors might be having intimate moments with their loved ones or they are having some major events like a family member being hospitalised or may be they are having a funeral, but the photographers click pictures and post it in magazines or social media. The same thing happened recently when a popular actor Dilip Kumar passed away and his family wanted some along time but photographers kept publishing the photos and videos without their consent.

While we talked about the negatives above, it is also important to discuss the positive impacts of taking such photos. A lot of people religiously follow celebrities and are genuinely interested in knowing about their personal lives. Certain activities can give them motivation in life such as looking at the idols following a healthy diet or working out in gym. I know a lot of actors who are happy to share their fitness videos as that also helps them to promote their upcoming movie and gain more fan following.

In conclusion, I would like to say that though there are both positives and negatives about popular people being photographed by paparazzi, it is important to give them space and ask for consent before taking any such pictures.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the lack of privacy for celebrities and the potential for positive influence through fitness content. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the argument regarding positive impacts could be expanded with more depth. The position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion effectively summarises the stance. To reach a higher band, ensure that each body paragraph provides more detailed analysis or a broader range of supporting examples to fully explore the implications of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, which helps the reader follow the argument easily. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'While we talked about', and 'In conclusion' are used appropriately to link ideas. However, the transition between the two body paragraphs is slightly mechanical. To improve, try to use more sophisticated linking phrases or ensure that the flow between sentences is more natural. Overall, the paragraphing is sufficient and contributes to a clear progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate and appropriate for the task. You have used some topic-specific terms like 'paparazzi', 'consent', and 'intimate moments'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies, such as the use of 'affects' instead of 'effects' in the introduction. The range of vocabulary is sufficient for the task but lacks the more sophisticated, less common lexical items that would characterise a higher band. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and varied synonyms to avoid repetition and add nuance to your arguments.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'along time' instead of 'alone time' and the aforementioned 'affects' vs 'effects'. Punctuation is generally correct, but some sentences could be more complex to demonstrate a wider range of grammatical control. The majority of your sentences are error-free, which is a strength. To aim for a higher band, focus on reducing minor slips and incorporating a greater variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, with greater precision.
