IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays famous people are photographed by professional photographers everywhere they go. Some people say this is a good thing because the public are interested in their lives. Other people think that photographers are wrong to follow famous people.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Nowadays, it is increasingly common for famous people to be photographed by professional photographers wherever they go. While some people argue that this is acceptable because the public is interested in celebrities' lifestyles, others believe that constantly following them can disturb their personal life. This essay will discuss both views first before presenting why I believe photographers should respect the private lives of famous individuals.
On the one hand, there are several reasons why people support photographing celebrities. Firstly, famous people attract a significant amount of public interest, and fans are never disappointed by photographers. For example, people can follow the celebrities' trends, such as clothing, couple lifestyle, and Western trends. Secondly, celebrities often benefit financially from the public, as regular media coverage can increase their chance to get decent number of films, music or other kinds of promotional activities where they can help the companies by doing advertisements and creating side income for themselves.
On the other hand, following famous people constantly can have serious negative consequences. Celebrities are still ordinary people who need personal space and time away from their professional lives, so they can share some moments with their families and loved ones. Being photographed without permission, particularly while spending time with someone special, family or friends, can make them feel uncomfortable and stressed.
I believe that photographers should be allowed to take pictures of famous people when they are attending public events or promoting their movies or songs. However, they should not follow them into private places or when they are sharing some personal moments with someone.
In conclusion, although photographs of famous people can satisfy public curiosity and benefit celebrities, constantly following them is unacceptable for privacy reasons. A reasonable balance between the public's interest and celebrities' privacy is therefore necessary.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and logically extended, such as the discussion on the financial benefits for celebrities versus the psychological need for privacy. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the development of the arguments could be more nuanced; for instance, the point about 'Western trends' is a bit vague and could be better linked to the broader impact of celebrity culture on society. Overall, the task is well-handled with a clear structure and relevant supporting points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints. The referencing is generally clear, though some transitions could be slightly more sophisticated to improve the flow between sentences. The overall structure is coherent and supports the development of the argument well.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. You use terms like 'professional photographers', 'public interest', 'media coverage', and 'psychological consequences' effectively. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'get decent number of films', which sounds slightly unnatural. The range is adequate to convey your meaning clearly, but to achieve a higher score, you should aim for more precise and less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary. The current level is solid and allows for clear communication without any significant errors in word choice.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. There are occasional minor slips, such as 'increase their chance to get decent number of films' (should be 'increase their chances of securing a significant number of film roles'). Punctuation is generally correct, and the control over complex structures is good. The errors present do not impede communication or cause confusion for the reader. To improve, focus on refining the accuracy of complex noun phrases and prepositional usage.
