IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays famous people are photographed by professional photographers everywhere they go. Some people say this is a good thing because the public are interested in their lives. Other people think that photographers are wrong to follow famous people.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The issue of whether photographers should follow famous people has become increasingly important in recent years, influencing both the public and media organisations. This essay will discuss both perspectives and present my own opinion on this trend, using clear explanations and relevant examples.
One key point to consider is that many people take a strong personal interest in the lives of celebrities. This is because social media has made it easier for the public to follow famous individuals and stay updated on their daily activities. For example, millions of people follow celebrities on Instagram and constantly check what they are doing in their personal lives. As a result, they often try to copy their lifestyle choices. Therefore, it is clear that public curiosity encourages photographers to capture images of famous people.
Another important aspect is that constant photography makes it difficult for celebrities to live a normal life. In other words, being followed everywhere by professional photographers can be extremely annoying, especially when celebrities want privacy. A good example of this can be seen when photographers wait outside gyms or restaurants and take pictures or ask questions, making celebrities feel uncomfortable. Thus, this shows that it is wrong for photographers to follow famous people too closely.
In conclusion, photographers reveal many aspects of celebrities’ daily lives, which may be interesting for the public. However, this behavior also disturbs the personal life of famous individuals. It is essential that photographers respect celebrities’ privacy by giving them personal space on certain occasions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The essay addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. The ideas are relevant, such as the public's interest in celebrity culture and the invasion of privacy. However, the development is somewhat limited; the arguments are presented in a straightforward manner but lack the depth or nuanced exploration required for a higher band. For instance, the discussion on why the public is interested could be expanded beyond social media to include the psychological aspect of escapism. The position is consistent throughout, and all parts of the prompt are addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, such as 'One key point to consider is...' and 'Another important aspect is...'. Cohesive devices are used effectively, including 'For example', 'As a result', and 'In conclusion'. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the range of cohesive devices is somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, the student could use more sophisticated linking phrases to connect ideas between paragraphs more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for clear communication. The student uses appropriate terms like 'media organisations', 'lifestyle choices', and 'privacy'. However, the range is somewhat limited and relies on fairly common vocabulary. There is little evidence of less common lexical items or idiomatic expressions that would demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language. While there are no significant errors in word choice or collocation, the overall lexical range is adequate rather than wide or flexible.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and punctuation is used correctly. There are no major errors that impede communication. The student uses complex structures such as 'The issue of whether... has become...' and '...especially when celebrities want privacy'. While the grammar is generally sound, the variety of complex structures is somewhat limited. To improve, the student should aim to incorporate a wider range of advanced grammatical forms, such as conditional sentences or passive voice constructions, to enhance the complexity of the writing.
