IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays famous people are photographed by professional photographers everywhere they go. Some people say this is a good thing because the public are interested in their lives. Other people think that photographers are wrong to follow famous people.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

While many people argue that there is nothing wrong with following celebrities for taking their photographs, others opine that this is a wrong approach. In my opinion, taking pictures of renowned people everywhere may have a detrimental impact on their life and the society itself.

On the one side of the argument, there are several individuals who support the actions of paparazzi. The most compelling reason for this is the interest in famous people's lives. As these public figures are considered role models for the new generation, they want to follow their lifestyle and routine. Therefore, some people find it obligatory for the famous personalities to share their photos from their daily life publicly because they became successful due to the general public's love and respect towards them. Moreover, this keeps the celebrities socially active on online platforms. For example, many people keep following their favourite actors on social media to see their regular updates even if they have not worked in any movie for a few years. Thus, for gaining more followers, some celebrities enjoy media attention.

Despite the above arguments, I am of the view that photographers are wrong to follow famous people. Indeed, one reason why I take this position is privacy invasion. When famous people are photographed everywhere they go, they cannot enjoy their personal life with their family members. Not only does the media snatche their basic right of freedom but also they may put their life in risk by showing their location publicly. Furthermore, it is my firm belief that the vulnerable groups of society such as youngsters may feel inferior if they compare their lifestyle with the celebrities' lifestyle. Hence, it may gaslight young people into believing that their lives are not good enough which may ultimately widen the gap between affluent and low-income people.

In conclusion, although both views are commonly held in the society, I consider that intrusive photographers are completely wrong about their actions as they are invading someone's private life and unintentionally forcing other community members to feel inferior.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, particularly the argument regarding privacy invasion. To reach a higher band, ensure that the arguments for the opposing view are as fully extended as your own; for instance, the point about celebrities enjoying media attention could be further supported with a specific example of how this benefits their career or brand. Overall, the response is well-structured and directly answers the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'On the one side of the argument', 'Moreover', 'Despite the above arguments', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two viewpoints. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the relationship between sentences is generally clear. To improve, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, in the third paragraph, the pronoun 'they' in 'not only does the media snatche their basic right... but also they may put their life in risk' is slightly ambiguous in its reference.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'detrimental impact', 'compelling reason', 'privacy invasion', and 'affluent' show a good level of control. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and awkward collocations, such as 'snatche their basic right' (should be 'snatch') and 'put their life in risk' (should be 'at risk'). Additionally, the word 'gaslight' is used in a context that is slightly imprecise regarding its psychological definition. Expanding your repertoire of academic collocations would help elevate your score further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There is good control over grammar, and most sentences are clear. However, there are a few persistent errors that prevent a higher score. For example, 'snatche' is a spelling error, and 'in risk' should be 'at risk'. You also have a minor subject-verb agreement issue in 'the media snatche'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to be noticeable. Focusing on proofreading for small grammatical slips and ensuring correct preposition usage will help you achieve a higher band.
