IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays famous people are photographed by professional photographers everywhere they go. Some people say this is a good thing because the public are interested in their lives. Other people think that photographers are wrong to follow famous people.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

There is an ongoing debate about the lifestyle of well-known people. A group of individuals believes that taking photographs of famous people is acceptable because the public is interested, while others claim that people should not follow them everywhere. Therefore, ahead of perspective, both viewpoints will be discussed in the ensuing paragraphs.

Examining the former opinion: the primary arguments the supporters put forward are that many people are interested in the daily lives of actors, singers, and sports stars. Photos can help newspapers, magazines, and websites provide news and entertainment to the public. For example, if a famous person attends a public event, people may want to see their photos to know about their hairstyle and clothing. Therefore, professional photographers can provide detailed information that many individuals want to see nowadays.

On the contrary, those in favour of the latter opinion have their own arguments. To begin with, they claim that following famous people can cause a serious problem. Celebrities are also human beings; that's why they need privacy to spend their time with their families and friends. Constant photography can make them uncomfortable, especially when they are shopping, eating at a restaurant, or spending time with their children. For instance, a famous person may be followed by several photographers while having a private dinner with their family.

Taking everything into consideration and offering my position, there are convincing arguments both for and against taking photographs of celebrities. However, I certainly favour the latter opinion. Photographers should respect the privacy of famous people because they also have equal rights, like ordinary people, to live in private space.

Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, guiding the reader smoothly through the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'ensuing paragraphs', 'professional photographers', and 'equal rights'. However, there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'ahead of perspective' which is unnatural in English. Spelling and word choice errors are minimal and do not impede communication. The vocabulary allows for a clear expression of ideas, fitting comfortably into the band 6.0 profile.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with good control over basic structures and punctuation. The student successfully constructs complex sentences, such as conditional structures ('if a famous person attends a public event, people may want to see their photos') and relative clauses. There are some minor grammatical errors and slightly awkward phrasings, but these errors rarely impede communication and the majority of sentences are clear and grammatically sound.
