IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays famous people are photographed by professional photographers everywhere they go. Some people say this is a good thing because the public are interested in their lives. Other people think that photographers are wrong to follow famous people.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In this modern world, majority of the affluent people are often followed by the photographers to capture their routine, satisfying the public's growing curiosity. Some argue that this exposure mostly benefits both the celebrities and their fans by enabling engagement and career growth. However, others opine that such interference generally invades their privacy and creates a stressful situation. I beileve that, public interest is understandable, but constant intrusion is not justifiable, and a clear boundry must be maintained.

On one hand, photographing celebrities often caters to the public's growing demand which helps to have an insights about the rich lives. Moreover, in an age that has been dominated by social media and influencers, most of the individuals are eager to know about their favourite actors, athletes as well as public figures. In addition, the media and entertainment sources generally rely on such information to generate a souce of employement and revenue. For these reason, the photographers are simply responding to the public demand.

However one cannot overlook the other side too, where constant surviellience can be instrusive, and can violate their privacy rights. Celebrities are human beings entitled to personal space, and capturing pictures during their intimate moments like family gathering or a party can be stressful. Not every public apperarance is an outing, and therefore they deserve private moments with their family and friends. One pertinent example is, Virat Kohli, where despite requesting it to the papprazzi for privacy, he is being constantly monitored to know about his personal life.

To conclude, I believe that every individual should be given personal space to have a peaceful life, and a balance must be maintained. Therefore, encouraging strong ethical practices would be beneficial to protect personal space without underming the public's right to stay informed.
