IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays famous people are photographed by professional photographers everywhere they go. Some people say this is a good thing because the public are interested in their lives. Other people think that photographers are wrong to follow famous people.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In this contemporary era, there are contrasting views where one section of society believes that popular people being stalked by media individuals in order to get information is a positive thing, while the opposing view suggests that these ways of obtaining photos are absolutely unacceptable. I will discuss both viewpoints in detail over the subsequent paragraphs.

To commence with, many people are starstruck by celebrities and curious about their day-to-day lives. Additionally, the majority of the population comes across public figures all around them, whether it is on advertisement banners, in movies, or on social media; therefore, they want to know more about their personal lives. To exemplify, when a popular actor is seen in public with their family or attending a major event, photographs and news reports about their personal lives often attract significant attention on social media. This allows fans to learn more about their favourite celebrities and keeps them connected with their lives outside their professional work. Hence, this example vividly illustrates why locals prefer to gain knowledge about famous figures.

On the contrary, influential individuals have the right to their privacy and can choose not to share intimate data with the public. In other words, many individuals do not prefer to be photographed outside of their sets or have their personal lives posted on social media. For instance, well-known personalities tend to keep information about their marriages and children private because sometimes they can face trolling if the public does not approve of their decisions or criticises the appearance of their children. Thus, the aforementioned reason substantiates why people do not like to be followed.

To recapitulate, this essay clearly discussed the importance of sharing knowledge with the public about their favourite celebrities, while such information can have adverse effects on the personal lives of professionals. From my perspective, prominent figures should share information that they feel comfortable sharing with their fans and citizens, and the media should respect boundaries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—the public interest in celebrities and the right to privacy—and provides a clear position throughout the essay. The ideas are generally relevant and extended well, as seen when you explain why fans are curious and how public figures face online trolling. However, the development in places has a tendency to over-generalise or remain slightly superficial rather than fully elaborated, which prevents the score from reaching a higher level. For instance, the discussion on social media's impact could have explored deeper societal implications. Nevertheless, your stance is coherent and maintained from the introduction through to the conclusion, fully meeting the core requirements of this level while showing glimpses of extended support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the introduction to the public's perspective, then to the celebrity's viewpoint, and finally to a balanced conclusion. You utilise cohesive devices quite flexibly, such as 'To commence with', 'Additionally', 'To exemplify', and 'On the contrary', which guide the reader effectively. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately. While the flow is logical, occasional minor mechanical shifts in referencing keep it at this level rather than achieving fully seamless progression. Overall, the structure is robust and easy to follow, reflecting strong overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, allowing you to discuss the topic effectively. You successfully incorporate less common lexical items and collocations with an awareness of style, such as 'contemporary era', 'starstruck', 'influential individuals', and 'intimate data'. There are also occasional minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'media individuals' instead of media personnel or paparazzi, and 'locals' when referring to general fans or citizens. However, your spelling is accurate and these minor word choice slips do not impede communication. To move to a higher band, try to integrate even more sophisticated and precise phrasing naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

Your response features a good variety of complex structures, including relative clauses and conditional-like patterns, and contains frequent error-free sentences. You maintain good control of grammar and punctuation throughout. For example, sentences like 'Furthermore, the majority of the population comes across public figures all around them...' demonstrate a secure grip on complex syntax. While a few minor errors persist—such as slight awkwardness in prepositions or phrasing within longer clauses—they are rare and do not impede communication. Your control over verb tenses and agreement is solid, showing the strong foundation required for this high level of grammatical accuracy.
