Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays famous people are photographed by professional photographers everywhere they go. Some people say this is a good thing because the public are interested in their lives. Other people think that photographers are wrong to follow famous people. In my opinion, both the views have merit, but I am more inclined towards the view that photographers are wrong to follow famous people.

Though, I do agree with the fact that famous people are public figures, and their fans want to know about their daily routine, hobbies, interests, achievements, opinion on hot topics, etc. Therefore, professional photography greatly influence the way their lives are potrayed to the public. Professional photographers are well equipped with the latest technology, including high quality cameras, latest picture and video editing softwares, and advanced techniques to improve the quality of the image and videos. Hence, professional photographers have the audacity to make famous people even more famous.

For example, if we compare a 1970s film with any of the 2000s film, we'll see a big difference. It's the professionalism and technological advancement in the media industry that had completely altered the cinema. It had made it much more interesting and eye-catchy. This is the reason that some people say that it is a good thing that famous people are photographed by professional photographers everywhere they go because public are interested in their lives and these professional photographers make their lives even more interesting.

Alternatively, other people think that photographers are wrong to follow famous people. I strongly believe that famous people influence the lives of the ordinary people in all possible ways. The fans of these people are not only interested in their lives, but they also follow them. For example, a famous Pakistani actress, Mahira Khan, was once captured while drinking a bottle of bear. A large number of her followers also started drinking bear after watching her photograph. Everyone has their own private life, therefore when these professional photographers follow these people all the time, they also capture their private lives that might not be as much positive as they are playing infront of the camera.

In conclusion, I would say that photographers are wrong to follow these famous people everywhere they go because when they follow them all the time, they also capture their private lives, which can leave a negative impact on their followers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that it is a good thing and that it is wrong—and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is uneven. For instance, the paragraph discussing the benefits of professional photography wanders into a slightly irrelevant comparison about 1970s and 2000s films and cinema technology rather than strictly focusing on famous people's lives and public interest. The position is stated and maintained, but some arguments, such as how photographers make celebrities 'even more famous,' lack sufficient depth and clarity. To reach a higher level, all parts of the prompt need to be fully developed and extended with more focused, relevant examples that directly support the core arguments without straying into tangential topics.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each viewpoint, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different ideas. However, cohesion can feel somewhat mechanical and rigid, particularly in transitional phrases like 'Though, I do agree with the fact that...' and 'Alternatively, other people think that...'. Referencing is occasionally slightly loose, and the logical progression between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. To achieve higher bands, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that transitions between contrasting points flow naturally without relying on formulaic expressions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'technological advancement', 'professionalism', and 'private life'. There are some word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'potrayed' (spelling error) and 'drinking a bottle of bear' (incorrect word choice: 'beer'). Additionally, phrases like 'playing infront of the camera' show awkward collocation. These errors do not impede communication, but they highlight the limitations in precision at this level. To improve lexical resource, the writer needs to expand their control of less common vocabulary and pay closer attention to exact word forms, spelling, and natural collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use relative clauses and conditional structures, such as 'if we compare a 1970s film with any of the 2000s film, we'll see a big difference.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including article misuse ('the views' instead of 'both views', 'the public are' showing minor agreement inconsistency depending on dialect choice, though plural verb with public is acceptable in UK English, but 'a big difference' is fine), and minor punctuation slips like comma splices. However, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To progress, the writer should aim for a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and refine their control over articles and prepositions.
