IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays famous people are photographed by professional photographers everywhere they go. Some people say this is a good thing because the public are interested in their lives. Other people think that photographers are wrong to follow famous people.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

These days, paparazzi follow celebrities wherever they go to capture them. According to some, this is a positive thing, as their fans are deeply invested in their lives, whereas others believe that it is inappropriate to follow popular people because it is unethical. In my view, there should be a balance between both approaches.

Most fangirls want to see their celebrity crush on a daily basis. They consider it a right to know everything about the celebrity's life because they often claim to pray for their well-being. Not only do they keep an eye on their idol's life, but they also make fan edits to circulate them in the fandom. Professional photographers feed the genuine fans with their favorite celeb's photographs. However, others consider it a toxic trait to photograph every detail of famous people. Not only does it violate their privacy, but it also irritates them by constantly being watched. For instance, there has been a case where a Korean boy band was being followed by paparazzi to their apartment. This obsession does more harm than good.

As far as I am concerned, giving famous people space is as necessary as getting to know them personally via images or videos. Being a fan myself, I always looked forward to new photographs of my favorite stars and used to make collages of their printed pictures. But now, I think getting too attached to a famous person can be toxic; therefore, there should be a limit to learning about a celeb while respecting their boundaries.

In conclusion, although having celebrities' photographs can be considered a form of fangirling, following them all over the world can become a bit creepy. I prefer to know about my favorite stars without getting to know what is happening in their personal lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on paparazzi and offering a clear personal position throughout. In terms of development, your ideas are generally relevant, but some are slightly under-developed or rely on broad generalizations rather than deep elaboration. For instance, your mention of a Korean boy band being followed to their apartment is a relevant example, but it is introduced rather abruptly without fully exploring the wider implications of privacy intrusion. To reach the next level, you need to extend your supporting points with more thorough explanations and fully fleshed-out examples rather than briefly touching upon them. However, your clear stance and coverage of both perspectives mean your response successfully meets the requirements for this level while showing glimpses of more extended argumentation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from introduction to conclusion. You make use of standard cohesive devices and transition markers such as "According to some", "However", and "In conclusion" to signal shifts in perspective. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each main idea grouped into its own distinct paragraph. Nevertheless, the cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or formulaic, and referencing is not always completely clear—for example, when linking pronouns back to their antecedents across sentences in the body paragraphs. To progress further, you should aim to weave cohesive devices more naturally into the text and ensure smoother transitions between sentences. Your organizational structure is clear enough to guide the reader through your arguments effortlessly, reflecting a solid command of paragraph-level cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrasing such as "deeply invested", "violate their privacy", and "boundaries". Your word choice is generally clear and communicates your message effectively, with spelling and word-choice errors being minimal and not impeding communication. However, there are some instances of slightly less precise lexical choices or colloquial phrasing, such as "fangirls" and "celebrity crush", which sit on the borderline of formal academic or general training register. To achieve a higher score, you should incorporate a wider variety of sophisticated, less common lexical items with precise collocation and maintain a consistently appropriate tone. Overall, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your ideas with reasonable precision and flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures such as "Not only do they keep an eye on their idol's life, but they also make fan edits..." You demonstrate good control over basic sentence patterns, and your grammatical errors are relatively few, meaning they rarely impede communication. Minor errors do occur, such as in prepositional usage or slight awkwardness in complex structures, for example, "by constantly being watched". To move up to the next band, you need to produce a higher frequency of error-free sentences while maintaining a wide variety of complex grammatical structures. You already possess a good foundation in sentence variety, and with greater precision in grammar and punctuation, your control will fully bridge the gap to higher achievement.
