IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays famous people are photographed by professional photographers everywhere they go. Some people say this is a good thing because the public are interested in their lives. Other people think that photographers are wrong to follow famous people.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Many people argue that photographers have access to people's private life as they are hired for this job, however some people think it is absurd and against the moral values.
Nowadays, it has become a trend to post each and everything on various social media platforms. Many famous personalities hire social media marketing specialist along with photographers to record their daily routine life. This helps their followers to stay in touch with their favourite personalities.
Most of the time, the feedback is positive as people tend to follow the footsteps of their favourite persons encouraging themselves to indulge in good and responsible acts. The photographers assigned to this job have a responsibility to record and post about famous people lives, their likes and dislikes and about their upcoming projects.
People get influenced by their personalities and try to follow them.
For instance, Abdul Sattar Eidhi, a famous Pakistani philanthropist, raised about 20 million ruppes charity for his orphanage in just one day influencing millions of people to donate just because he was an active social media personality and many people were familiar with him and his work.
However, sometimes photographers depict infamous people as well who contribute negatively to the society through their acts. Since, most of the people are unaware of real personalities, they tend to follow them blindly.
Moreover, photographers sometimes breech privacy as well which is against ethical values.
For instance, a famous couple in California got divorced just because of involvement of paparazzi due to which their personal matters got leaked into the public and it resulted in their separation.
From my perspective, it is encouraging to admire the good qualities of public figures and photographers act as a medium to potray this however, each and everything should not be displayed as they are not public property.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your response successfully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that professional photography of famous people is positive and that it is an invasion of privacy—while also clearly stating your own perspective in the conclusion. Your ideas are relevant, such as mentioning the positive influence of philanthropists and the negative impact of paparazzi on personal lives. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for instance, the first body paragraph touches on social media marketing, but the explanation remains somewhat generalized rather than fully extended. To reach a higher band, you need to ensure that all arguments are equally well-supported with deeper explanation and fully integrated examples throughout the entire essay.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
Your essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance and distinct paragraphs that separate the different viewpoints and your conclusion. You make use of basic cohesive devices such as 'Nowadays', 'Most of the time', and 'However' to guide the reader through your arguments. Nevertheless, cohesion is at times mechanical, and referencing is not always entirely clear, such as the abrupt transition between sentences in the second paragraph ('This helps their followers...'). Furthermore, paragraphing could be managed more effectively by grouping related ideas more logically rather than having several very short, isolated paragraphs. To improve, you should aim for smoother transitions between sentences and more flexible use of cohesive devices to create a stronger sense of progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and subject-specific terms such as 'philanthropist', 'paparazzi', and 'social media marketing'. Communication is generally clear, though there are some word choice and word form errors that occasionally distract, such as writing 'ruppes' instead of 'rupees', 'breech' instead of 'breach', and 'potray' instead of 'portray'. Additionally, phrases like 'private life' could be more naturally expressed as 'private lives'. These lexical slips and spelling inaccuracies prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher level of precision. To advance, you should focus on mastering word forms, expanding your repertoire of less common collocations, and checking your spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional and participial clauses (e.g., 'Since most of the people are unaware...'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation present throughout the text, but they rarely impede communication. Examples include missing articles or pluralization issues, such as 'famous people lives' instead of 'famous people's lives', and minor punctuation oversights. While you attempt complex sentences, some lack precision in preposition use or agreement. To achieve a higher band, you need to increase your proportion of error-free complex sentences and ensure greater accuracy in grammatical structures and punctuation throughout the text.
