IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays famous people are photographed by professional photographers everywhere they go. Some people say this is a good thing because the public are interested in their lives. Other people think that photographers are wrong to follow famous people.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Well, photographs are an essential part of life. People want to take photos for almost everything to preserve memories. Nowadays, famous people are photographed by paparajis everywhere they go. Some pople believe, this is a good thing while others are not agree with this. I will discuss both the views and give my opinion.

In this paragraph, I would like to shed some lights on the positive side of taking photographs of famous people by professional photographers. To begin with, some people are huge fan of celebrities so they want to know everything about them. They want to follow their lifestyle. As a result, photographers take photos of them and post that on social media. For example, there is one page on Instagram called InstantBollywood. On this page, they post all photos and reels of the famous actors on it as soon as they see them and click their photo on the road.

On the other hand, celebrities have their personal life too. Sometimes, any actor can be in a bad mood or mentally disturbed. At that time celebrities do not like that somebody could take a photo of them. Furthermore, if photographers follow celebs everywhere then there shold not be any privacy for them. As a result, many stars settle down to foreign countries to live their life peacefully.

To opine, photographers should know the limit when to take photos and when not. Too much of anything can hurt people. Since everything is withing the limit then it is okay otherwise not.

Overall, photographers can follow actors to some extent but always keep in mind that they have their private life as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views and give a clear personal position: you support photographers taking pictures only within limits. The paragraph about public interest explains that fans want to know about celebrities and gives a relevant Instagram example; the opposing paragraph also identifies privacy and emotional wellbeing as concerns. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The benefits are mainly described as fans wanting to follow celebrities, without explaining why public interest makes constant photography beneficial, and the claim that stars move abroad is not supported with a specific example or explanation. Your conclusion repeats your position but does not add much. Develop each side with a fuller reason and a concrete, relevant example to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “To begin with,” “On the other hand,” and “To opine” help readers follow the direction of the discussion, and the ideas generally progress logically within each paragraph. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some effective paragraphing. At times, however, connections feel mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “As a result,” and references such as “that” in “post that on social media” are not fully precise. The final two paragraphs also repeat the idea of limits and privacy. Use a wider range of linking methods and make references explicit, while ensuring each paragraph adds a distinct point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “celebrities,” “lifestyle,” “privacy,” and “photographers.” There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “shed some lights” and “settle down,” but these are not used accurately or naturally in context. Noticeable spelling and word-choice errors include “paparajis,” “pople,” “shold,” and “withing,” while phrases such as “huge fan” and “take photos of them” are repeated or rather basic. These slips do not prevent the reader from understanding the argument, but they limit precision and naturalness. Build a more accurate range of collocations for discussing media attention, public interest, and personal boundaries, and proofread spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple sentences and some longer structures, including a conditional sentence (“if photographers follow celebs everywhere then there should not be any privacy”) and a reason clause beginning “Since.” The main message remains understandable, but there are several errors in sentence construction and agreement. For example, “Some people believe, this is a good thing” has incorrect punctuation between the reporting verb and clause, and “others are not agree” uses an incorrect verb form. In “some people are huge fan,” the noun needs plural agreement, while “when to take photos and when not” is an incomplete parallel construction. Aim for accurate basic patterns first, then use complex sentences selectively and check articles, agreement, and clause structure.
