IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays famous people are photographed by professional photographers everywhere they go. Some people say this is a good thing because the public are interested in their lives. Other people think that photographers are wrong to follow famous people.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

as we know, being a famous celebrity is also very heard because where ever they go they are being followed by paparazzi and the social media photographers and they can not have family time of their own.

Bein famous is also very hard for them and their family around them, their is no personal life for them, many people like this becuause they want to know about their favouite people and follow their lives through social media and the photos,

but most of the people think that it's disturbing, such as no personal life for those people.

i believe in my point of view that photography should be limited only to these people work not to their personal life as they disturb their privacy

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify both perspectives: the public’s interest in celebrities’ lives and the concern that photographers invade their privacy. You also give a clear personal view, saying photography should be limited to celebrities’ work rather than their personal lives. However, the response addresses the task only minimally: neither view is explained with developed reasons or a relevant example, and the distinction between public interest and intrusive following remains brief. The response is 124 words, so it does not meet the required minimum of 250 words. To strengthen the answer, explain why some people value celebrity photographs, then discuss the effects of constant attention on celebrities and their families, supporting each point with an example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is a basic sequence from the difficulty celebrities face, to public interest, to your own opinion, so the reader can identify the main direction of your response. However, the ideas are not arranged into clear paragraphs, and the shift between views is abrupt. The sentence beginning “Bein famous…” combines several points with commas, making the relationship between them unclear. The final opinion is also attached to the preceding idea rather than developed as a distinct conclusion. Organise the response into an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Use clear linking phrases such as “On the one hand” and “In my view,” while ensuring each sentence develops one main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “paparazzi,” “personal life,” “privacy,” and “social media,” which makes your central concern understandable. However, the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise, such as “famous people,” “follow their lives,” and “disturbing.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “Bein,” “becuase,” and “favouite,” which reduce the accuracy of the writing. Aim to use a wider set of topic-specific expressions and check spelling carefully. For example, you could describe photographers as “pursuing celebrities” and explain that this can “intrude on their private lives,” rather than repeating the same basic terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to connect ideas in longer sentences, and the reader can generally understand your main message. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and errors occur frequently. For example, “where ever they go they are being followed” needs clearer clause punctuation, while “their is no personal life” has an incorrect subject form. The sentence beginning “i believe in my point of view” also lacks appropriate capitalisation and punctuation and has an awkward structure. Use a mixture of accurate simple sentences and carefully controlled complex sentences. Check subject–verb forms, pronouns, capital letters, and sentence boundaries; splitting long comma-linked sentences will help make your meaning clearer.
