IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays famous people are photographed by professional photographers everywhere they go. Some people say this is a good thing because the public are interested in their lives. Other people think that photographers are wrong to follow famous people.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
In contemporary world, there has been a rising trend of photographing famous people. While some people believe that it is a good thing to photograph celebrities, others, dispute this notion. This essay will discuss both views in detail and argue that paparazzi must not breach the privacy of famous people by taking excessive photographs of them.
Proponents of the view that famous people must be photographed contend that filming the personal lives of renowned personalities gives content to media houses. Since public is curious to know about the lives of these people, they like to watch such content which subsequently increases the TRPs of these shows. To illustrate, there was an Indian show called the Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives, which portrayed daily routines of high-profile Indian actors. Me and my sister loved watching it, as it was a good source of entertainment. Moreover, this show had an IMDB rating of 8.5 which depicts how much people are interested in the personal lives of celebrities.
Conversely, paparazzi must not be too intrusive in the lives of well-known people. After all, famous people are also humans, and they have every right to protect their privacy. Media coverage does not mean that famous people must be followed at every single place. For instance, it is highly insensitive of media to film celebrities while crying at funerals. They should learn to respect their privacy on such occasions. In my opinion, it is very important that photographers must not cross their limits while capturing the lives of eminent personaliies.
In conclusion, although public demand encourages paparazzi to film the lives of famous people, excessive intrusion in their lives must be avoided. I firmly assert that famous people also have a right to safeguard their privacy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and state a consistent opinion: public interest can make celebrity coverage entertaining, but photographers should respect privacy. The example of the Bollywood Wives programme supports the first view, while filming people at funerals gives a relevant illustration of intrusive coverage. These points make the response purposeful and relevant. However, the first argument focuses mainly on the commercial value of celebrity content and your personal enjoyment; it could explain more fully why public interest justifies photographing people in different settings. The opposing view is clearer, but the discussion would be stronger with more development of where legitimate reporting ends and unacceptable intrusion begins. This combination of clear coverage and some unevenly developed ideas fits the response’s current level; fuller explanation would strengthen it further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay has a clear four-paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to each viewpoint and then a conclusion. The progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “To illustrate,” “Conversely,” and “In conclusion” help readers recognise the stages of the argument. Ideas within each paragraph generally follow a sensible order, especially the link between public curiosity, media audiences, and the example of a television programme. Some linking is a little formulaic, however, and the transition from the show’s rating to the claim about public interest could be explained more explicitly. The conclusion also largely repeats the position already stated in the introduction. More varied referencing and smoother links between evidence and claims would make cohesion more flexible while preserving the strong overall organisation.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for the topic, including “intrusive,” “privacy,” “high-profile,” “media coverage,” and “safeguard their privacy.” These choices communicate the central ideas clearly, and some less common expressions show an effort to write in an appropriately formal style. There are occasional inaccuracies or awkward collocations, such as “filming the personal lives” and “increases the TRPs of these shows”; “photographing” or “covering” and “boosts audience ratings” would be more natural in context. “Eminent personaliies” also contains a spelling error, and “dispute this notion” is less precise than simply saying that others oppose the practice. Greater consistency in natural collocations and careful proofreading would add precision and flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The response uses a range of sentence forms, including complex clauses with “Since,” “which,” and “although,” and many sentences are clear and grammatically controlled. For example, “After all, famous people are also humans, and they have every right to protect their privacy” is straightforward and effective, while the conditional-style contrast in the conclusion is also handled clearly. A few errors remain. In “Since public is curious,” the article is missing (“the public”); “Me and my sister loved watching it” uses an informal and incorrectly ordered subject pronoun (“My sister and I”); and “others, dispute this notion” has unnecessary punctuation. The phrase “it is very important that photographers must not” also combines structures awkwardly; use “it is important that photographers do not” or “photographers must not.” These are limited issues, and correcting them would improve already good control.
