Student answer (Band 6.0)

the first tqble illustrates the chnages in total urbanisation(exact number )of new york city between 1800 and 2000.the other tables identify changes in the amount of peoples who lives in the five districts of new york city which are manhattan, brooklyn, bronx, queens and staten islan over the same period.

Overall, the population in new york city expanded ten times over 200 years, as manhatten has the highst amount of people in the past but in 2000 the other districts overtook it.

New york city has a big groth in it's population from 79 thousand people in 1800 to 3.5 million people over the next 100 years to finally gain almost two time more urbans, total of 8 millin citizens in 2000.

This urbanisation is splitted across 5 districts,as Manhatten covers the highest population in the year 1800 with 76% of the population to end up only with 19% of urbans in the 2000.while the rest splitted across the rest of four cities where they start with only 18 thousand people in 1800 and end up with four-fifth of the population in 2000.Mentionning that Manhatten and the rest of districts almost gain equal populations in the year 1900.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main overall pattern: New York City’s population rose substantially, while Manhattan’s share fell and the other districts’ share grew. The overview that Manhattan led initially but was overtaken by the other districts by 2000 is relevant and accurate. You also include useful comparisons for all three years, including the near-equal shares in 1900. This covers the key features, with some evidence of the fuller selection expected at a stronger level. However, “expanded ten times” is inaccurate: the total rose from about 79,000 to 8 million, or roughly a hundredfold. “Almost two time more” is also unclear. The district figures are sometimes imprecise, and the 2000 Manhattan population decline from 1900 is not reported. Prioritise accurate comparisons and clarify the scale of change.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable four-part structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs of supporting detail. The information generally moves from the citywide trend to the district comparison, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “while,” and “Mentioning that” show an effort to connect ideas. This gives the report a coherent overall arrangement. However, some connections are awkward or unclear: “This urbanisation is splitted across 5 districts” does not clearly introduce the population breakdown, and the final “Mentioning that” fragment is not smoothly integrated. The long final paragraph also combines several comparisons without clear sentence boundaries. Use separate, complete sentences for the 1800, 1900, and 2000 comparisons, and make references such as “the rest” explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of task-related vocabulary, including “expanded,” “overtook,” “population,” and “districts,” and the reader can usually understand the intended comparisons. However, word choice and spelling errors are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning less precise. “Urbanisation” is not the right term for population size, while “urbans” and “amount of peoples” are unnatural; “population” or “residents” would be more suitable. There are also misspellings such as “chnages,” “Manhatten,” and “millin,” and phrases such as “gain equal populations” do not collocate naturally. Build accuracy with standard demographic terms and check spelling, word forms, and collocations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and more complex comparisons, for example, “as Manhattan has the highest amount of people in the past but in 2000 the other districts overtook it.” This shows some range, and the main message is generally recoverable. However, sentence control is uneven: the final paragraph contains a run-on construction, and “Mentioning that…” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence. There are also errors in articles, agreement, and verb forms, as in “the amount of peoples who lives” and “the rest splitted.” Capitalisation and full stops are inconsistent, which further affects readability. Practise building complete sentences around one main comparison, with accurate subject–verb agreement and past-tense forms, then use punctuation to separate each idea.
