Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main overall patterns: New York City’s population grew substantially, Manhattan’s share fell, and the other four districts’ share rose. You also report several accurate figures, including the city totals for 1800 and 2000 and the districts’ 1800 and 1900 percentages. However, some key information is not fully developed: the city’s 1900 total is omitted, and Manhattan’s population itself rose to 1,850,093 in 1900 before falling to 1,538,096 in 2000, a change your account does not explain. The final figure for the other districts is given as a percentage but not as a population. More precise coverage of these changes would make the summary more complete and clearer.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by details about the city and its districts. The contrast between Manhattan and the other districts is also a useful organising principle. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent overall organisation, and some progression is evident. However, links between ideas are sometimes mechanical or unclear. For example, “One of them is Manhattan district” does not clearly connect the citywide figures to the district comparison, while “Furthermore” and “In contrast” do not always express the relationship between the figures that follow. The final paragraph also combines several time points without a clear comparison of population and share. Use more precise referencing and organise the details consistently by year or by district.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing trends, including “increased,” “decline,” “proportions,” and “rose,” so the main comparisons can be understood. However, the range is limited by repeated or unnatural expressions such as “numbers of population,” “with the passage of time,” and “total percentage.” Several spelling errors—“iccreased,” “conrast,” “conteast,” “Finaly,” and “polution”—also make the writing less controlled. Some word choices are imprecise: “became double” does not accurately describe the rise from 24% to 46%, and “ratio” is not the best term for a population share. Build a more accurate set of collocations for reporting population figures and proportions, and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “In contrast, others four districts proportions of population rose…” and the time sequence in the final paragraph. The main meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “numbers of population increased” lacks a natural grammatical construction, and “One of them is Manhattan district had 76%” combines incompatible sentence patterns. In “its percentage became double and showed 46%,” the subject and verb relationship is also unclear. Articles, possessives, and agreement need more consistent control. Practise forming direct comparison sentences, such as stating that Manhattan’s share fell while the other districts’ share increased, and check that each sentence has a clear subject and verb.
