Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which negatively impacts the score. While you have identified the main trends, such as the overall population growth and the shift in Manhattan's proportion, the analysis is somewhat fragmented. You have included some data points, but the presentation is inconsistent, and the summary lacks a clear, cohesive overview of the data provided in the tables. To improve, ensure you cover all parts of the task, including a more structured comparison between the five districts, and ensure the response meets the length requirement to avoid a penalty.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organised into paragraphs, but the logical flow is hindered by awkward phrasing and repetitive sentence structures. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Subsequently' and 'In addition', but they are sometimes applied mechanically or incorrectly. The referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when discussing the shift between the 1800 and 2000 data. To improve, focus on using transition words more naturally to connect your ideas and ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus, such as one for the total population and another for the district-specific comparisons.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. There are several errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'adittion' and 'districs'. You rely on basic verbs like 'grew' and 'fell', which limits the sophistication of your report. To improve, try to incorporate more varied and precise vocabulary related to data trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'accounted for', or 'experienced a significant surge'. Additionally, pay closer attention to spelling and the correct formatting of numbers to ensure your writing appears professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('Manhattan's population is grew') and tense usage ('In 1800 the total population... was'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of apostrophes in numbers (e.g., '60'515'). While you attempt some complex sentences, they are often faulty, which can impede the reader's understanding. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence structures and proofreading for common errors like verb tense consistency and proper punctuation before attempting more complex grammatical forms.
