Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response attempts to address the task but fails to accurately interpret the provided data. The student confuses the districts of New York City with separate cities and misinterprets the percentage data. While there is an attempt to identify main features, the analysis is factually incorrect based on the provided tables. The summary is disjointed, and the lack of clarity regarding the data trends prevents a higher score. To improve, focus on accurately reading the labels and figures in the tables and ensuring that the summary reflects the actual information presented rather than making assumptions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is limited and often repetitive (e.g., 'In first table', 'The data which is giving'). There is a lack of clear transition between ideas, making the text difficult to follow. Referencing is often unclear, particularly when discussing the different tables. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that contributes to the overall summary of the data.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, which limits the ability to describe the data precisely. There are frequent errors in word choice and spelling (e.g., 'mentoiond', 'districs', 'popultaion', 'peek'). The student struggles to use appropriate terminology for describing trends, such as 'increasing' or 'decreasing', without sufficient nuance. To improve, learn specific vocabulary for describing data trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', or 'accounted for', and pay closer attention to spelling and standard collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Both table illustrates'), article usage, and sentence structure. The range of grammatical structures is very limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after periods and incorrect capitalization. To improve, focus on basic sentence construction, ensuring that subjects and verbs agree, and practice using more complex sentence structures like relative clauses or comparative forms to improve the flow of the writing.
