Student answer (Band 7.5)

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully identifies the main trends and provides a clear overview of the population changes. You have selected key data points to support your descriptions, such as the population figures for 1800, 1900, and 2000. However, the analysis of the district data is slightly hampered by minor inaccuracies in the interpretation of the percentages and the grouping of 'other districts'. For instance, you mention '81%' for other districts in 2000, which is a slight miscalculation of the provided data. Despite this, the response covers all parts of the task well and presents a clear, logical summary of the information provided in the tables.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the total population and the district-specific data. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'However', and 'By the year 2000' to link your points effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different aspects of the data. While some transitions are a bit mechanical, the overall structure is clear and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a well-organized response.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information accurately, using terms like 'fluctuations', 'constituted', and 'accounted for'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'across the similar time' (should be 'over the same period') and 'maximum population was of other districts'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more varied and sophisticated vocabulary related to data trends and statistical reporting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as the sentence fragment 'but. the percentage accounting for the total decreased' and minor issues with article usage and prepositions. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of the data. The majority of your sentences are clear and correctly structured. Focusing on proofreading to eliminate punctuation errors and refining subject-verb agreement would help improve your accuracy further.
