Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main trends and provides data from the tables, identifying the overall growth of New York City and the shift in population distribution from Manhattan to the other districts. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For example, the report mentions 'other states' instead of 'other districts' or 'boroughs', which is a factual inaccuracy regarding the data provided. While the main features are highlighted, the comparison between the districts could be more detailed, particularly regarding the specific growth patterns of the other four boroughs. The response addresses the prompt but lacks the depth required for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. There is a clear overall progression from the general city population to specific district comparisons. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive (e.g., 'In year 2000', 'During 1900'). Some transitions between sentences are abrupt, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as when the text refers to 'other states' instead of the specific districts mentioned in the prompt. Paragraphing is present but could be more effectively used to separate the overview from the detailed data analysis.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as using 'states' instead of 'districts' or 'boroughs', and 'numbers get changed' which is informal and imprecise. Spelling errors like 'contineously', 'Manhatten', and 'recoreded' occur throughout the text. While the student manages to convey the basic meaning, the range of vocabulary is limited, and the errors occasionally draw attention to themselves, preventing a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('The other two table shows'), missing articles ('in same period'), and awkward phrasing ('This is the least number from rest of the period'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary commas used in the opening sentence. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to suggest a lack of control over complex structures, keeping the score in the mid-range.
