Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the data, identifying the total population growth and the shift in distribution between Manhattan and the other districts. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For instance, the calculation for the 'remaining 4 districts' in 1800 is inaccurate based on the provided data, and the report lacks a clear overview or summary of the trends. While the key data points are mentioned, the lack of precise comparison and the inclusion of minor calculation errors limit the depth of the response. To improve, ensure that data is reported accurately and that a clear, concise overview of the main trends is provided in the introduction or conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the chronological progression. However, the use of cohesive devices is very limited and often mechanical. Transitions between sentences are abrupt, and the lack of linking words makes the flow feel disjointed. For example, the transition between the 1900 data and the 21st-century data is abrupt. To improve, use a wider range of cohesive devices such as 'consequently', 'in contrast', or 'furthermore' to connect ideas more fluidly and improve the logical progression of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety expected at higher bands. There is frequent repetition of basic terms like 'population', 'contains', and 'districts'. Some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'highest stake contain by manhattan' and 'preferences of city by public'. The range is sufficient to convey the basic information, but it does not demonstrate the flexibility or sophisticated control required for a higher score. Focusing on using more varied synonyms and precise collocations will help elevate the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include missing articles (e.g., 'in new York'), incorrect verb tenses (e.g., 'is 76,216' instead of 'was'), and run-on sentences. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and capitalisation of proper nouns. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will significantly improve accuracy.
