Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The first table provides the total number of population of five boroughs in New York City between 1800 and 2000, while the second and third tables illustrate the movements of the population on the same districts over the same time period.
Overall, the proportion of population significantly increased in New York City, whereas, other other districts (Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island) accounted for the rise of population in 2000 . Despite the upward trend, Manhattan's population declined tremendously and reached its lowest point at the end of the period.
Regarding the total population, New York City's population started at 79,216 people in 1800. This figure rose to 3.4 million in 1900 and it reached its highest population at 8,0009,185 million in 2000. In terms of the percentage of total population in each districts, Manhattan accounted for the 76% of the total distribution of people in 1800.
However, this proportion dropped significantly 54% in 1900 and plummeted by 19% in 2000, placing it as the least populated borough in New Tork City. Meanwhile, the rest of the four districts (Brooklyn. Bronx, Queens, and Stated Island) started at 24% in 1800 to 46% in 1900. The total population boomed at 81% in 2000, making it the most populated boroughs in New York City.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully identifies the main trends and provides a clear overview. You have selected relevant data points to support your descriptions, such as the population figures for 1800, 1900, and 2000. However, there are some inaccuracies in the data reporting; for example, you state Manhattan reached its lowest point in 2000, but the table shows it had 1.5 million people, which is higher than its 1800 figure. Additionally, the figure '8,0009,185 million' is confusing and contains a typo. While the main features are covered, more precise data handling would improve the score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized into four paragraphs, with a clear introduction, overview, and two body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Regarding', 'However', and 'Meanwhile' to link ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the total population data from the borough-specific percentages. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though some transitions between sentences could be smoother to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Overall, the structure supports the reader's understanding of the data.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'plummeted', 'boomed', and 'proportion'. There are, however, some issues with word choice and accuracy, such as 'movements of the population on the same districts' (should be 'in the same districts') and the typo 'New Tork'. The expression '8,0009,185 million' is a significant error in numerical representation. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, these inaccuracies slightly hinder the precision of your report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the opening complex sentence and the use of 'while' to contrast data. There are several grammatical errors, including 'the proportion of population' (missing 'the'), 'each districts' (should be 'each district'), and 'the most populated boroughs' (should be 'the most populated borough'). Punctuation errors, such as the period after 'Brooklyn' instead of a comma, also occur. These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points.
