Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the task by identifying the main trends in population growth and the shift in distribution between Manhattan and the other districts. However, the analysis is somewhat mechanical, relying heavily on listing figures rather than synthesizing the data. The overview is weak; it lacks a clear summary of the most significant trends, such as the overall exponential growth of the city and the dramatic reversal of the population proportion between Manhattan and the outer districts. To improve, focus on grouping data to highlight key comparisons rather than listing every statistic chronologically.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into three paragraphs, which is a logical structure. However, the progression of ideas is hindered by repetitive sentence structures and a lack of varied cohesive devices. Transitions between sentences are often missing or simplistic (e.g., 'In 1900 the population is...'). The use of referencing is sometimes unclear, and the concluding sentence is vague and grammatically awkward, failing to provide a cohesive summary of the data presented. Improving the use of linking words such as 'whereas,' 'in contrast,' or 'consequently' would help the flow of information.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'increase' and 'population.' There are issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'the population more increase to' and 'time to time.' While the student successfully uses some technical terms like 'percentage' and 'districts,' the range is insufficient to demonstrate flexibility. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate a wider variety of verbs and nouns related to data description, such as 'surged,' 'plummeted,' 'proportion,' and 'demographic shift.'
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and sentence construction. Examples include 'the population was increase' (should be 'increased') and 'the table... show how the population increase' (should be 'shows' and 'increased'). There is a lack of complex sentence structures, and punctuation is inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of basic errors in tense and subject-verb agreement limits the score. Focusing on consistent tense usage for historical data is essential.
