Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the task by identifying the main trends in population growth and the shift in distribution between Manhattan and the other districts. However, the analysis is hampered by significant inaccuracies in reporting the data. For example, the claim that 80% of the population lived in other districts in 1900 is not supported by the provided tables. Furthermore, the description of the percentage decline in Manhattan is confusingly phrased. While the main features are identified, the lack of precision in data interpretation and the unclear presentation of the figures prevent a higher score. The response would benefit from a more careful verification of the data points before writing.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the flow of ideas is often disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes misused, such as the awkward transition 'whereas' at the end of the final paragraph. Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when discussing the 'other districts'. The progression of information is not always logical, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the years and the districts. Improved use of linking words and clearer sentence structure would significantly enhance the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, with several spelling errors such as 'new yourk', 'manhatten', 'laginy', and 'increc'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the information with precision. Phrases like 'major improvement' are not ideal for describing population growth, and the use of 'pop. Population' is redundant and informal. To improve, you should focus on using more precise academic vocabulary related to trends and data, such as 'significant increase', 'proportion', or 'demographic shift', and ensure correct spelling throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'population... saw' and 'percentage... decline'. Sentence structures are often fragmented or run-on, particularly in the final paragraph. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing commas and incorrect capitalisation of proper nouns like 'New York' and 'Manhattan'. While there is an attempt to use complex structures, they are often faulty. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors would help improve the accuracy of your writing.
