IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The first table below shows changes in the total population of New York City from 1800 to 2000. The second and third tables show changes in the population of the five districts of the city (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island) over the same period.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The rendered table illustrates the information about alteration in total population of New York city as well as in five different cities such as Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and States Island during 1800 to 2000. The data is calibrated in numbers and percentage.
After taking the statistical data into account, it may infer that during 1800, the total population in New York city was accounted as 79,216, followed by this population increased by 3,437,202 in after hundred years. However, in 2000, the figures for overall population of new York city was calculated as above 8,000,000. Additionally, the proportion of total populace in Manhattan was range between approximately 20% to 76% during three centuries.
Moving further towards the rest of the details, it is clearly seen that 24% of population of Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and States Island was recorded for 1800. Meanwhile, these figures were almost double for the same distinct cities in 1900. Moreover, about 80% of population of Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and States island was calculated in 2000.
Overall, it is readily apparent that the maximum amount of populace was accounted for Manhattan as compared to other cities during given years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the data, including the total population growth and the shifting proportions of the five districts. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For example, the statement that Manhattan's population ranged between 20% and 76% is a broad summary but lacks specific data points to illustrate the trend effectively. Furthermore, the grouping of the other four districts is a good strategy for synthesis, but the description of the percentages is slightly inaccurate based on the provided tables. To reach a higher band, ensure that the data selected is precise and that the comparison between the districts is more clearly articulated.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Moving further', and 'Overall' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the phrase 'these figures were almost double for the same distinct cities'. The paragraphing is appropriate, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the total population to the specific district breakdowns, which helps the reader follow the information provided in the tables.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with attempts at academic phrasing like 'calibrated in numbers' and 'statistical data'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'rendered table', 'accounted as', and 'States Island' (instead of Staten Island). The word 'populace' is used, but sometimes in contexts where 'population' would be more natural. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, the lack of precision and occasional errors in word formation prevent the response from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'it may infer' (should be 'it may be inferred'), 'was range between' (should be 'ranged between'), and 'in after hundred years'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the frequent errors in verb tense and passive voice construction indicate a lack of full control over complex structures. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to limit the score in this criterion.
