Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the task by summarizing the population data for New York City and its districts. However, the analysis is inconsistent and contains several factual inaccuracies regarding the data provided in the tables. For instance, the claim that the population of Manhattan decreased to 1,538,096 in 2000 is incorrect based on the provided figures. Furthermore, the report lacks a clear overview of the main trends, such as the overall growth of the city versus the shifting proportions between Manhattan and the other districts. The information is presented in a somewhat disjointed manner, and the lack of precision in reporting the data limits the score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'the table collate that' or 'other district proportion were fall down'. The progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing and unclear referencing, making the flow feel disjointed. While there is an attempt to use linking words like 'Furthermore' and 'Moreover', they are not always used to connect ideas logically. The overall arrangement is coherent enough to follow, but the lack of sophisticated cohesive devices prevents a higher score.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'the other two table depicts' (should be 'tables depict') and 'irek stidly' (which is unclear and likely a misspelling). The student struggles to use precise terminology to describe trends, relying on basic phrases like 'go up' or 'go down'. Additionally, there are consistent spelling errors, such as 'new yourk' instead of 'New York'. These errors occasionally impede the reader's understanding of the specific data points being discussed.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures, and attempts at more complex sentences are frequently marred by grammatical errors. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the resident... were', 'Manhattan have'), incorrect verb tenses, and missing articles. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some sentences lacking proper capitalization for proper nouns. The frequency of these errors is high, which significantly impacts the clarity of the writing. To improve, the student needs to focus on basic sentence construction and ensure that verbs agree with their subjects.
