Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the task by summarizing the population data. However, the analysis is hampered by significant inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, the student mentions '19000' as a year, and the interpretation of the percentage shifts for Manhattan and other districts is confusing and mathematically inconsistent with the provided tables. While the main features are identified, the lack of clarity and the misrepresentation of the data mean the response fails to provide a clear, accurate overview. The comparison between districts is underdeveloped, and the overall summary lacks the precision required for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the flow of ideas is frequently disrupted by awkward phrasing and poor sentence structure. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with' and 'On the other hand', but they are often applied mechanically or incorrectly, such as 'One the other hand' and 'Finaly,In 1900'. The referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of the data. Paragraphing is present but does not effectively group related information, leading to a disjointed reading experience.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The range of vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'depects' instead of 'depicts', 'perpotion' for 'proportion', and 'districs'. The use of terminology is imprecise, and the student struggles to express numerical data clearly. While the meaning is generally discernible, the frequent errors in basic vocabulary and the inability to use more sophisticated academic terms limit the score. The student relies on simple, often incorrectly used, descriptive language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a high frequency of grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement, punctuation, and sentence construction. Examples include 'New York city had highest population' (missing articles), '1800 and 19000 had population' (incorrect year and structure), and 'accounted 8009185' (missing preposition). Complex sentence structures are attempted but are almost always inaccurate, leading to confusion. Simple sentences are also prone to errors. These frequent errors often impede the reader's understanding of the specific data points being presented.
