Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. While the student attempts to report on the data, the information provided is inaccurate and confusing. For instance, the claim that the population increased to over 3 million after one decade (from 1800 to 1810) is factually incorrect based on the provided tables. The summary lacks a clear overview of the main trends, and the data selection is disjointed, failing to effectively compare the growth of Manhattan against the other districts. The response is too brief to adequately cover the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5
The essay lacks logical progression. While there is an attempt at paragraphing, the transitions between sentences are mechanical and often illogical, such as the use of 'Turning into details' followed by inaccurate data. The referencing is unclear, and the lack of cohesive devices makes the text difficult to follow. The final paragraph is particularly disjointed, with the phrase 'In lastly' being grammatically incorrect and failing to provide a coherent conclusion to the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary is very limited and repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'popultion', 'manthattan', 'reaming', and 'inclinded'. The student struggles to use appropriate terminology for describing data trends, relying on basic phrasing that does not demonstrate the range required for a higher band. The misuse of terms like 'rendered tabular representation' suggests an attempt at academic tone that is not supported by the actual language control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement, incorrect tense usage (e.g., 'it will be inclinded'), and poor sentence structure. Many sentences are fragmented or lack necessary articles and prepositions. The complexity of the structures is very low, and the errors are pervasive throughout the text, making it difficult to identify any consistent control over basic grammatical rules.
