Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Here we are given with three Tables which are showing different kind of information as in the first table we are given with the increase and decrease in population in New York from 1800 to 2000, while in the remaning two tables there is information about the population of five districts of the city.

Overall, in New york the change in the poluation in the three centuries is significantlly increasing as it started from 79,216 in 1800 and going upto 8,009,185 in 2000. This much increase in the poluation is very high.

when we talk about the other two tables the second one and the third one we see that in the Manhattan city the ratio or the precentage of the population is kind of decreasing from 1800 to 2000. As in 1800 the percentage of the population was 76% but with time it decreases to 54% in 1900 and it continues to decreasing and was 19% in 2000.

As according to the third table the data shows that the percentage of population in the other five cities increases very significantally and it goes from 24% in 1800 to the 81% in 2000.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the data, such as the overall population growth and the shifting proportions of the districts. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you correctly identify the growth in total population and the decline in Manhattan's share, the description of the other districts is vague, grouping them together rather than highlighting specific trends for Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, or Staten Island. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific data points from the tables to support your observations and ensure that comparisons between the districts are more detailed and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'as' and 'in the'. The transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be smoother. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when referring to 'the other two tables' and 'the other five cities', which makes the progression of ideas feel slightly disjointed. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring clear signposting between ideas would enhance the flow of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and variety expected at higher bands. There are several spelling errors, such as 'remaning', 'significantlly', 'poluation', and 'significantally'. Furthermore, the phrasing is often simplistic, relying on basic descriptors like 'very high' or 'kind of decreasing'. To improve, you should focus on using more precise academic vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'dramatic increase', 'steady decline', or 'proportionate share', and ensure that your spelling is accurate throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'Here we are given with three Tables which are showing', 'it continues to decreasing', and 'As according to the third table'. There are also issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of verb forms after 'continue to' will help improve your accuracy.
