Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response attempts to address the task but fails to provide a clear summary of the main features. The data interpretation is inaccurate; for instance, the student confuses percentages with population numbers and misrepresents the trends. The response lacks a clear overview, and the information provided is disjointed and difficult to follow. While the student mentions the districts, the analysis of the data is superficial and does not effectively compare the changes over the two-century period. To improve, focus on identifying the most significant trends—such as the overall growth of NYC and the shift in population distribution from Manhattan to the other boroughs—and present these clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The response lacks logical organization and paragraphing. There is no clear progression of ideas, and the sentences are linked in a repetitive and mechanical way. Cohesive devices are either missing or used incorrectly, making the text difficult to navigate. The introduction is confusing, and the body paragraphs do not follow a logical structure to present the data. To improve, use clear paragraph breaks to separate the introduction, overview, and specific data points. Use linking words like 'whereas', 'in contrast', or 'subsequently' to connect ideas more naturally and improve the flow of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary is very limited and often inaccurate. There are frequent spelling errors (e.g., 'noumber', 'distdicts', 'imformation') and word choice issues (e.g., 'public' instead of 'population', 'generational improvement' which is contextually irrelevant). The student struggles to use appropriate terminology to describe statistical trends, relying on basic verbs like 'raise' or 'decrease' without precision. To improve, learn specific vocabulary for describing data, such as 'fluctuate', 'decline', 'proportion', and 'significant growth'. Focus on spelling common words correctly and using terminology that is relevant to academic report writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede communication. There are significant issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'This table demonstrate'), article usage, and sentence structure. Many sentences are fragmented or lack proper punctuation, making the text difficult to read. There is no evidence of complex sentence structures, and the basic structures used are often faulty. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, including correct verb tenses and subject-verb agreement. Practice writing simple, error-free sentences before attempting more complex structures, and pay close attention to punctuation and capitalization.
