Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student has provided a clear summary of the population changes in New York City and its districts between 1800 and 2000. However, some important details are missing, such as the population figures for the other districts, and comparisons could be clearer and more coherent. The overall context of the city’s growth and how each district contributed to the total population should be emphasized more. Overall, the response fulfills the task requirements but could better illustrate the data. Score: 6

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The coherence and cohesion of the response are moderate, with a logical structure that introduces the main topic effectively. However, transitional phrases are lacking, making it harder to follow the comparisons between the different periods and areas. For example, using phrases like "In contrast" or "Furthermore" could improve the flow of information. Paragraphing could be more distinct to separate ideas more clearly. Score: 6

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The lexical resource used is adequate but somewhat limited. Words like "surge" or "experienced a slight decline" demonstrate some variety; however, terms like "highest among all cities" lack accuracy—specifying the cities could have added clarity. The use of percentages is good, but the repetition of "total population" instead of using synonyms is noticeable. Expanding the vocabulary would enhance the response. Score: 6

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The grammatical range is decent, with a mix of simple and complex sentences. However, there are some noticeable errors: "The the population of New York City" (typo), and incorrect constructions such as "the population surge and was 8,009,185" should be corrected to "surged to 8,009,185." A few sentences lack clarity due to awkward phrasing. Improving grammar and varying sentence structures could enhance overall quality. Score: 6

First, ensure to cover all districts comprehensively and include all relevant figures for better comparisons. Using more varied vocabulary and transition phrases will enhance the flow, helping readers follow your points. Focusing on clear grammar and sentence structures will also aid clarity and coherence. Continuing to practice will help you refine these skills further before your exam.
