Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 1.0
The response is completely off-topic. The task required a summary of population changes in New York City and its five districts based on the provided tables. Instead, the student wrote a report about electricity production in Australia and France. Consequently, the response fails to address any part of the actual task prompt. While the student provides a summary of the data they chose to write about, this does not satisfy the requirements of the prompt provided. As the response is entirely irrelevant to the data presented, it cannot be assessed for task achievement regarding the intended topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into paragraphs with an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. There is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'While', and 'On the contrary'. However, the logical progression is undermined by the fact that the content is entirely unrelated to the prompt. The referencing is clear within the context of the student's chosen (but incorrect) topic, but the overall structure does not serve the purpose of the actual task.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends and data, such as 'significantly surged', 'declining', 'remained constant', and 'vast majority'. There are some awkward phrasings like 'becoming sharply a vast majority', but the vocabulary is generally adequate for a data-reporting task. However, because the vocabulary is applied to an irrelevant topic, it does not demonstrate the ability to describe the specific data provided in the prompt.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'France uses comparatively dramatic amount' (missing article), 'as per the year' (inappropriate preposition), and 'generating the same of twenty five units'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with sentence fragments and run-on sentences. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of errors in basic grammar and sentence construction limits the score.
