Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response attempts to address the task by reporting data from the tables; however, it fails to provide a clear overview or identify the main trends. The information is presented as a list of figures rather than a cohesive summary. There is a lack of comparison between the districts, and the data is presented in a repetitive, mechanical way. Furthermore, the response contains significant factual errors in the reporting of the data (e.g., the 2000 population for Manhattan is stated as 1,538,096, which contradicts the provided table). The response lacks the analytical depth required for an Academic Task 1 report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The response lacks paragraphing and logical progression. Ideas are presented in a disjointed manner, with sentences simply listing figures one after another. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link ideas, and the referencing is often unclear (e.g., the repetitive use of 'his' to refer to population figures or districts). The overall structure is very basic and does not facilitate a smooth reading experience. The lack of an introduction or a concluding summary further hinders the coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary is very limited and repetitive. The student relies heavily on basic terms like 'peoples', 'amount', and 'lives'. There is no attempt to use a range of vocabulary suitable for describing statistical data, such as 'increased', 'decreased', 'proportion', or 'significant'. The misuse of pronouns (using 'his' to refer to inanimate objects like districts or population counts) indicates a lack of control over basic lexical choices. The range is insufficient to convey the information with any degree of precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede communication. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement ('peoples lives', 'peoples amount is'), incorrect tense usage, and awkward sentence structures. The use of 'his' to refer to non-human entities is a persistent error. There is no evidence of complex sentence structures; the writing is limited to simple, often fragmented, sentences. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with spaces missing before periods and commas.
