Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response attempts to address the task by summarizing the population data for New York City and its districts. However, the information provided is often inaccurate or poorly interpreted. For instance, the data for 1800 is misread, and the comparison between Manhattan and the other districts is confusing. The report lacks a clear overview of the main trends, such as the significant overall growth over the two centuries. The data points are presented in a fragmented way, and the lack of clarity in reporting the figures makes it difficult for the reader to follow the trends. To improve, you must focus on accurately transcribing the data and identifying the most significant changes rather than listing numbers.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link ideas, making the writing feel like a list of disconnected sentences. Referencing is often unclear, and the transition between the years 1800, 1900, and 2000 is abrupt. The use of punctuation is inconsistent, which further disrupts the flow of the text. To improve, use linking words such as 'consequently,' 'in contrast,' or 'furthermore' to connect your sentences and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that guides the reader through the data.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

The vocabulary is very limited and repetitive. There are frequent spelling errors, such as 'manhaton' for Manhattan, 'bronze' for Bronx, and 'stakleen' for Staten Island. These errors, combined with the misuse of terms like 'include much better' and 'raised for 81 percentage,' hinder communication. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe trends or comparisons effectively. You should focus on learning specific vocabulary for describing data, such as 'increased significantly,' 'accounted for,' or 'the majority of,' and ensure you spell proper nouns correctly as they appear in the prompt.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede meaning. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The table illustrate'), incorrect verb tenses, and missing articles. Sentence structures are simple and often fragmented. For example, 'it shows less population in the period if this year' is grammatically incoherent. There is a lack of complex sentence structures, and the errors in basic sentence construction are pervasive. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence patterns, ensuring subject-verb agreement, and using correct verb tenses when describing past events and trends.
