IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The first table below shows changes in the total population of New York City from 1800 to 2000. The second and third tables show changes in the population of the five districts of the city (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island) over the same period.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The rendered combination of three tabular charts demonstrate information regarding the total population in the city of New York and the changes of population of five districts during 1800 to 2000.

At the fleeting glance over the first table, the total people of New York was 79,216 in 1800, after a century the population recorded for 3,437,202. Interesting, in 2000, the total resident noted as 8,009,185.

Further scrutinizing and extracting the features of second and third table,in 1800, the highest proportion of population noted as 76 in Manhattan while in 2000, the maximum population noticed as 81% in given other districts except Manhattan. It is surprisingly note that in 1900, the total percentile was 54% in Manhattan and the rest of the percentage of population was accounted in other districts.

Overall, it is luminous that the total count of individuals were increased over the given time periods in the city of New York.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the data, but the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you mention the total population growth and the shift in distribution between Manhattan and the other districts, the interpretation of the data is occasionally confusing. For example, the claim that 'the maximum population noticed as 81% in given other districts' is unclear and lacks precision. You have identified the key trends, but the report would benefit from a more systematic comparison of the specific figures provided in the tables rather than general observations. Ensure that all data points are clearly linked to the correct years and categories to avoid ambiguity.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'At the fleeting glance over the first table' and 'Further scrutinizing and extracting the features'. These phrases feel a bit forced. While there is a clear overall progression from the total population to the district-specific data, the transitions between sentences could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow of ideas is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing, which prevents a higher score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including terms like 'proportion', 'percentile', and 'scrutinizing'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and awkward collocations, such as 'rendered combination', 'total people', and 'it is luminous'. These errors occasionally make the text sound unnatural. To improve, focus on using vocabulary that is more appropriate for academic reporting. For instance, instead of 'total people', use 'total population', and avoid overly dramatic or non-standard descriptors like 'luminous' when describing data trends.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The rendered combination... demonstrate' (subject-verb agreement), 'the total resident noted as' (missing verb/passive voice error), and 'the total count of individuals were increased' (incorrect tense/passive construction). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and using passive voice constructions correctly when describing data trends, as these are essential for Task 1 reports.
