The first table below shows changes in the total population of New York City from 1800 to 2000. The second and third tables show changes in the population of the five districts of the city (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island) over the same period.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 4.0)
New York City includes of five districts ,there is increase population year wise. Therefore ,in year 1800 population is rapidly increase to year 2000.But in Manhattan district there is population percentage decrease from year1800 to 2000 year. Therefore here is shocking how population percentage is decrease so rapidly. On the other hand except all four districts there is population percentage is increase from year 1800 to 2000 year. Then there is a big difference which is population percentage of five districts. This difference is responsible in many reason.I think government is the main factor of a big difference.Government takes some steps stop this decreasing curve. And govt solve this problem. In my opinion population variation depends many things such as meal’s ,jobs etc But i see in between year Manhattan district population becomes increased. Then 2000 there is suddenly decrease so some fact are responsible. but in the other side, but others in between years. Populations is balanced.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to adequately summarise the provided data. Instead of reporting the main features and trends, the text includes subjective opinions, such as 'I think government is the main factor' and 'govt solve this problem,' which are irrelevant to an Academic Task 1 report. The description of the data is inaccurate; for example, the claim that Manhattan's population percentage decreased from 1800 to 2000 is not supported by the provided tables, which show significant growth in absolute numbers. The response lacks a clear overview and fails to make meaningful comparisons between the districts or across the time periods, resulting in a failure to address the core requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The response lacks logical organisation and progression. Ideas are presented in a disjointed manner, and the use of cohesive devices is mechanical and often incorrect, such as the repetitive use of 'Therefore' and 'Then.' There is no paragraphing, which makes the text difficult to follow. The referencing is unclear, particularly when discussing the 'four districts' versus the 'five districts,' and the transition between sentences is abrupt. The lack of a clear structure prevents the reader from identifying a coherent summary of the information provided in the tables.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying on basic terms like 'increase,' 'decrease,' and 'big difference.' There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'year wise,' 'meal’s,' and 'some fact are responsible.' The student struggles to use precise terminology to describe statistical trends or data comparisons. The language used is informal and lacks the academic tone required for this task. The errors in word formation and usage occasionally impede the clarity of the message, making it difficult to understand the intended meaning regarding the population trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that affect the readability of the text. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'population is rapidly increase'), article usage, and sentence structure. Many sentences are fragmented or run-on, such as 'New York City includes of five districts ,there is increase population year wise.' The range of grammatical structures is very limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences with errors in tense and punctuation. The lack of control over basic grammar makes the writing difficult to follow and significantly impacts the overall quality of the response.
