Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the task but fails to clearly present the main trends. The data interpretation is confusing; for example, the description of the 1800 population figures is inaccurate and difficult to follow. The response lacks a clear overview of the significant growth in New York City over the two centuries. Furthermore, the comparison between the total population and the individual districts is poorly integrated, making it hard for the reader to grasp the key features of the data. To improve, focus on identifying the most significant changes—such as the massive overall growth—and use the data to support these points clearly rather than listing isolated figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks logical progression. The introduction is repetitive, and the body paragraphs are disjointed. While there are some attempts at cohesive devices like 'On the other hand' and 'Overall', they are often used incorrectly or do not help the flow of ideas. The paragraphing is ineffective, as the information is not grouped logically by time period or category. The referencing is also unclear, making it difficult to determine which data points correspond to which districts or years. Improving the structure by using clear topic sentences and logical sequencing would significantly enhance the coherence of the writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and contains several errors in word choice and collocation. The word 'alternations' is used repeatedly where 'changes' or 'fluctuations' would be more appropriate. There are also issues with basic terminology, such as 'resident's' (possessive instead of plural) and 'residency' (used incorrectly to mean population). The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the data with precision. To reach a higher band, you should focus on using more varied and accurate vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'significant increase', 'dramatic rise', or 'remained stable', and ensure that nouns and verbs are used correctly in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The table illustatres', 'the other table illustrate'), incorrect use of articles, and punctuation errors, such as missing spaces after commas and unnecessary capitalization. The sentence structures are mostly simple or contain errors when attempting more complex constructions. For instance, 'the number of residents in 1800 year seen rapidly decline' is grammatically incorrect. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct verb tenses, and proofreading for common errors like subject-verb agreement and pluralization.
