Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the task but fails to provide a clear or accurate summary of the data. While it mentions the total population figures, the analysis of the district data is confusing and mathematically inaccurate. For example, the claim that Manhattan had a '76% growth' in 1800 is not supported by the provided tables, and the description of the other districts is vague and difficult to follow. The response lacks a clear overview of the main trends, such as the significant shift in population distribution from Manhattan to the other boroughs over the two centuries. The information provided is insufficient to give the reader a clear understanding of the data trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The introduction is poorly constructed with run-on sentences and punctuation errors. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Meanwhile' and 'In other districts', but they are often used incorrectly or do not effectively link the ideas. The referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the years and the districts. The overall structure is mechanical rather than fluid, which hinders the clarity of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, often relying on basic terms like 'changes', 'growth', and 'number'. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'Taking about' instead of 'Talking about' or 'Writing about', and 'stright' instead of 'straight'. The use of 'demographic growth' is somewhat formal but is used incorrectly in the context of the data provided. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the information with precision, and spelling errors are frequent, which occasionally impedes the reader's understanding.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that affect readability. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'sceond and third table show'), incorrect preposition usage, and missing articles. Sentence structures are generally simple, and attempts at more complex sentences often result in errors, such as 'In 1800 the demographic growth is 79,216 which rises in 1900 with amount of 3,437,202'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and periods. These errors are frequent and represent a limited control of grammatical structures.
