Overall, New York City experienced dramatic population growth over the two centuries, rising from just over 79,000 inhabitants in 1800 to more than 8 million in 2000. Manhattan was the dominant district during the nineteenth century, whereas Brooklyn and later Queens became the largest population centres by the end of the period.

The total population increased steadily from 79,216 in 1800 to 3.4 million in 1900, before more than doubling again to approximately 8 million by 2000.

In 1800, Manhattan contained the overwhelming majority of the city’s residents, with about 60,000 people, while Brooklyn had fewer than 6,000 and the other districts had very small populations.
