Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The student attempts to address the task by describing the tables showing the population changes in New York City from 1800 to 2000. However, the coverage of data is incomplete and contains inaccuracies. For instance, the student states that Manhattan's population decreased year by year, missing the fact that Manhattan's population actually grew significantly between 1800 (60,515) and 1900 (1,850,093) before dropping slightly to 1,538,096 in 2000. Furthermore, there is no clear overview presented, and the selection of main features is disjointed. The response touches upon the information but fails to develop the comparisons fully, leading to a Band 4.5 performance for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The response is divided into short paragraphs corresponding to different parts of the prompt, but the logical progression is weak. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repetitively (e.g., 'In first table shows...', 'In second and third table demonstrate...', 'So in this highest percentage...'). Referencing is frequently unclear, and the lack of proper paragraph structuring makes the progression hard to follow. While the text has a beginning and an end, it lacks overall cohesive harmony and clear transitions between ideas, fitting the Band 4 descriptor well.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.0

The vocabulary used is very basic, repetitive, and heavily reliant on direct lifting or awkward paraphrasing from the prompt (e.g., 'total population', 'changes in population', 'districts'). There are frequent word-choice errors, such as 'demonstrate' used instead of 'demonstrates', and incorrect word forms like 'significants' and 'campare'. Spelling mistakes are also present (e.g., 'Brookly', 'queens', 'staten island'). The range of vocabulary is limited and inadequate for a standard academic task, constraining the score to Band 4.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The writing displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying primarily on simple sentences or poorly constructed complex clauses. There are frequent, heavy grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing subject-verb agreement ('The first table demonstrate'), missing articles ('In first table'), and faulty verb tenses ('population is increase year by year'). Punctuation and capitalization are also inconsistently handled. These frequent errors cause strain for the reader and reflect a Band 4.0 level of grammatical control.
