Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the task by summarizing the provided tables on New York City's population from 1800 to 2000, but it does so only partially. While it manages to present some key features—such as Manhattan's decreasing percentage of the total population alongside the growth of other districts—the selection of data is sometimes inaccurate or confusing. For example, the writer misinterprets the timeline duration, stating there is a 'tenure of 10 years from 1800 to 20000', and introduces typos in the years. Furthermore, some of the comparisons between districts lack clarity and precision. To reach a higher level, the response needs to present a more accurate and fully developed overview of the main trends without factual distortions or confusing numerical errors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The organization of the text lacks clear overall progression and logical flow. Although the writer attempts to divide information into paragraphs, the structure is fragmented, with several very short, isolated sentences such as 'This in formation include the all data of five districts.' Paragraphing is used insufficiently and inappropriately, breaking up related ideas rather than grouping them into a cohesive narrative. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, leading to mechanical transitions like 'Other four districts clinch the highest percentage'. Pronoun referencing and signposting are weak, making it difficult for the reader to follow the logical relationship between the tables. To improve, the writer should group related data logically and use a wider variety of accurate cohesive links to connect sentences and paragraphs smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable lexical errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'spotted Surge' and 'clinch', but these are used with awkward collocations and imprecise word choices. There are also frequent spelling and word-form errors, including 'Manhttan', 'information', and 'globalization value', which detract from the overall quality. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to use a broader range of vocabulary more accurately, ensuring that words and collocations fit the context of statistical reporting naturally without basic spelling slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on basic sentence forms alongside faulty attempts at complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense confusion, errors in subject-verb agreement, missing articles, and awkward prepositional phrases, such as 'The number of population climb up' and 'as compare to other four district'. Punctuation is also erratic in places. These frequent errors cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and impede clear communication. To improve, the writer must work on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and accurate grammatical forms when reporting data.
