Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview of the total population changes in New York City alongside specific data for Manhattan and the other four districts. Key features, such as the overall growth trend and the shifting population percentages between Manhattan and the outer districts, are clearly highlighted. However, some aspects are developed more fully than others; for instance, the details regarding individual districts are somewhat grouped rather than fully elaborated, leaving parts of the data slightly under-developed. Nevertheless, a clear picture of the main trends is successfully communicated.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from the general city-wide population to specific district comparisons. Paragraphing is used appropriately to structure the response, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'However', and 'On the other hand' are employed to guide the reader through the data. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, preventing the response from achieving a higher level of flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
An adequate range of vocabulary is deployed for the task, successfully conveying numerical data and trends using terms such as 'inhabitants', 'surged', and 'percentages'. The writer attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'modifications' and 'dramatic change', though some word choices and collocations are slightly imprecise, such as 'total number of population'. There are also minor spelling and typographical issues like 'arounthe d', but these do not impede communication, and the vocabulary remains generally sufficient to fulfill the requirements of the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases effectively. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('Manhattan consisted 76%') and minor prepositional inaccuracies, but these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. The majority of simpler structures are accurate, and control over sentence boundaries is generally maintained.
