Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover the main population changes and include relevant figures for all three periods, including the sharp rise in New York City’s total and the shift from Manhattan to the other districts. The overview identifies overall growth, and the final comparison that Manhattan’s share fell while the other districts’ share rose is relevant. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: Manhattan’s population in 1900 was 1,850,093, not 185,093, and the other districts are districts, not “countries.” The claim that Manhattan became the “lowest populated city” is not established by the table, which compares Manhattan with the combined population of four districts. Make the overview more precise and distinguish population totals from percentage shares.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for New York City, Manhattan and the other districts, followed by a conclusion. This makes the main comparisons reasonably easy to locate. Sequencing expressions such as “after 100 years,” “afterwards” and “in the end” help show the time progression, but they are sometimes repetitive or mechanical, and “in the end” is not a natural way to introduce the final data group. Some references are also unclear, particularly “the whole country,” since the figures concern New York City and its districts. Use more precise links between the figures and their referents, and organise the overview separately so the central contrast is immediately clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “total population,” “percentage,” “increased” and “decreased,” so the main information can generally be understood. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or repetitive: “countries” is used for districts, “spiked” and “increased aggressively” are informal or awkward for a data report, and “lowest populated city” does not express the comparison accurately. Spelling errors such as “mojor,” “Secoundly,” “surprisigling” and “thier” also reduce precision. Aim for neutral reporting language and accurate collocations, such as “rose substantially,” “accounted for,” and “the combined population of the other districts.” Check spelling carefully before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, including time clauses such as “after 100 years” and contrast with “although.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles and punctuation remain. For example, “The tables demonstrates” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “there are a mojor increase” uses an incorrect verb pattern. Several sentences run together without appropriate punctuation, as in the New York City paragraph, and capitalisation is inconsistent in “in 2000 It again increased.” Practise forming accurate sentences around comparisons and figures, and use full stops to separate complete ideas. Greater control of these patterns would make the report clearer.
