Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You report the overall city totals accurately: the population rose from 79,216 in 1800 to 8,009,185 in 2000, with the 1900 figure also correct. You also identify the key fall in Manhattan’s share, from 76% to 19%. However, the response only partly covers the tables: it does not report the other districts’ growth or their rise from 24% to 81% of the total, and it omits Manhattan’s population decline from 1,850,093 in 1900 to 1,538,096 in 2000. The overview is unclear, and the explanation about “improvement of live” is unsupported by the data. Select the main contrasts and summarise them explicitly rather than repeating that populations increased.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation: the first paragraph discusses the citywide totals, while the second turns to the district tables. This gives the reader a basic sense of the response’s structure. However, progression within both paragraphs is weak, and the second paragraph repeats the same general point about population increasing without adding clear comparisons. Linking phrases such as “and then” and “also” are used mechanically, while references such as “chart two and three” do not clearly identify which figures are being discussed. Use a separate overview and organise the details by meaningful comparison—for example, Manhattan versus the other districts—so each sentence advances the summary.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses a small set of relevant terms, including “total population,” “districts,” and “percentage,” so the basic subject is understandable. However, vocabulary is limited and repetitive: “kept on increasing” and “we can able to understand” recur instead of precise language for describing trends and comparisons. Several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, including “rapidely,” “decresing,” and “showen,” reduce accuracy and can distract the reader. Some expressions are also unsuitable for an objective data summary, such as “due to improvement of live,” which introduces an unsupported cause. Build a more varied set of accurate trend phrases and use neutral, data-focused wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts to connect ideas in longer sentences, but the range of structures is limited and these attempts are often faulty. For example, “we can able to understand” is ungrammatical, and “the total population combining all the five districts are 8,009,185” has problems with sentence construction and subject–verb agreement. The opening sentence also joins several independent ideas with commas, making the relationships between them unclear. Articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries are not consistently controlled. Practise writing shorter, complete sentences first, then add a small number of accurate complex sentences using clear comparisons and time references.
