Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the overall period and report several key figures, including the city’s population in 1800 and 2000 and Manhattan’s changing share. However, the response covers the tables only partially: it gives no population figure for the other districts in 2000 and does not clearly describe their substantial growth. The 1900 comparison is also inaccurate: Manhattan had 1,850,093 people, not “almost 2 lac more than the total population”; it was about 54% of the city’s population. There is no clear overview of the main trends, such as the city’s overall growth and the shift in population share away from Manhattan. The response is also 10 words below the required minimum. Include a concise overview and accurate comparisons across all three years.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response follows a basic chronological order, moving from 1800 to 1900 and then 2000, and uses time markers such as “In 1800,” “while in 1900” and “At last in 2000.” This gives the reader some sense of sequence. However, the information is presented in two dense paragraphs, with the main points and comparisons not clearly separated. The long second paragraph combines several figures and ideas, and transitions such as “But while” and “At last” do not always show the relationship between them clearly. A separate overview followed by organised comparisons would improve progression. Use linking phrases to make contrasts explicit, for example, showing that Manhattan’s share fell while the other districts’ share rose.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some task-related vocabulary, including “total population,” “percentage,” “ratio” and “districts,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several spelling and word-choice errors make the writing difficult to read, such as “camprison,” “popultion,” “Manathon” and “numbrous.” Some expressions are also unnatural or imprecise: “the total amount of the persons” and “Manhattan carries” do not describe population figures appropriately. Aim for accurate, repeated use of a small set of suitable terms, such as “population,” “accounted for,” “share” and “increased.” Check spelling carefully, especially for place names and key data vocabulary, as these errors currently strain communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to connect ideas in longer sentences using “while” and “which,” but the range of sentence structures is limited and these attempts are often faulty. For example, “The first table contain” has subject–verb disagreement, while “the Manthan only have 19 percent” uses an incorrect verb form. Several sentences also lack clear boundaries or appropriate punctuation, particularly the long sentence beginning “In 1800 the total population…” and continuing through the 1900 comparison. Articles and sentence construction are inconsistent, which sometimes makes relationships between figures unclear. Practise writing shorter, complete sentences first, then combine them accurately with contrast clauses. Check agreement, tense, and punctuation before submitting.
