Student answer (Band 6.0)

Water is a basic necessity of life. Without it no living thing will be able to survive. While some believe it should come at a cost, others argue it should be free and accessible by all. This essay supports the fact that water supply should be free of charge beacause it is a basic social amenities and essential for life.

Water is essential for life and should be readily available to all human being regardless of your social strata. Water is a free gift of nature about 76% of the earth is made up of water. In many underdeveloped and develped nations of the world , absence of clean water is one of the leading cause of death. Hence if a country can afford it , provision of clean water should be one of the major priority of the government. It is essential for a country to mainatain its population.

In most countries of the world, its citizens pay tax which is used to provide social amenities and development of the country. One of the most important social amenities is water. Therefore tax payers shou;d be able to benefit from the goveernmnent. Additionally, indirectly through the payment of tax, citizens are paying for the water therefore, water should be supplied to homes and offices free of charge. For example, free water supply by the government of gombe state in the desert town of kaltingo helped to reduce date rate of dehydration by 10%.

In conclusion, free water supply is eminent for human survival and should be made availabel for all because it is essential for life and it is the right of every tax payer.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you support free water because it is essential for life, and the conclusion restates this view. You give relevant reasons, including equal access, public health and the use of tax revenue, and the example about water provision in Gombe State helps make the argument more concrete. This addresses the task, but the reasons are not developed equally. For instance, the claim that water is a “free gift of nature” and the figure about the earth’s water do not fully explain why household supply should be free, since treating and delivering clean water also require resources. Explain how your proposal would work and develop the example or evidence more clearly to make the argument more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting reasons, and a conclusion. The progression from water’s importance to the role of taxation is logical, and signposts such as “Additionally” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The opening sentence of the second body paragraph moves quickly from taxes to social amenities and then to free water, without fully explaining the link between tax funding and the costs of supplying clean water. The example at the end of that paragraph is also introduced abruptly. Use clearer transitions to show how each example supports the paragraph’s main point, and make references such as “it” and “this” more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “clean water,” “social amenities,” “tax payers,” “dehydration” and “human survival,” which allows you to discuss the issue directly. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “regardless of your social strata.” However, several word-choice, collocation and spelling problems reduce precision: “basic social amenities” is awkward in this context, “date rate” appears to be an incorrect phrase, and “eminent” does not convey the intended meaning of necessary or important. Spelling errors such as “beacause,” “develped” and “availabel” are noticeable. Aim for accurate, natural combinations and proofread carefully; a more controlled range would make the argument clearer and more persuasive.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “While some believe it should come at a cost, others argue…” and the conditional clause “if a country can afford it.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity and control. For example, “all human being” needs a plural noun, and “one of the leading cause of death” requires plural agreement. The sentence beginning “Water is a free gift of nature” joins two independent ideas without suitable punctuation or a linking structure. There are also inconsistent pronouns in “all human being regardless of your social strata.” Check agreement, sentence boundaries and pronoun consistency, and vary complex structures while keeping them accurate.
